Are You Prioritising Self-Care?

It feels like there are lots of high performers running on a hamster wheel right now.

I've had so many conversations recently with friends (of course most of my friends are high performers) who don't have the time or energy to figure out how they can improve their work situation. Deadlines and other pressures are all-consuming, so it's easier to just keep the status quo and keep pushing.

I can relate. That was very much me until not too long ago.

Marisa Peer speaks about the rules of the mind, one of which is that we are hard-wired to move towards what is familiar, while resisting what is unfamiliar.

The day-to-day is familiar. Having the goal of overachieving at work is familiar.

Consistent self-care, unfortunately, is unfamiliar to far too many of us. Even once we start, when work gets challenging, it's often the first thing we drop. We're hard-wired for the familiar response of making work the priority.

What would it look like to hard-wire self-care time and make that familiar?

Starting is always the hardest part. It will get easier - just keep going.
