One of my biggest lessons in the past few years has been the knowledge of when to quit something.
The job, the relationship, the energy-draining activities.
We were raised by a generation of stoics, which made sense in the environment they were raised in (especially in South Africa and particularly for those previously disadvantaged). They were all about showing no fear, not rocking the boat and restraining responses to pain or distress.
I'm not saying stoicism doesn't still have its place, but it can sometimes do more harm than good.
If it doesn’t bring you joy, if it doesn't fulfill you or if your presence doesn’t feel valued, it may be time to take a beat and reflect on what needs to change. This could mean anything from declining an unnecessary meeting or delegating a task, to deciding to leave a role completely.
Walking away from something that doesn't serve you clears the space to allow in something that does.
